Hi there! I started Howl at the Moon Gems in 2000 and this is my website. I live in Beloit, WI and have a cute rescue dog named Daisy. And yes, no surprise, I doooo LOVE rocks! My store is located just off the square in downtown Elkhorn, WI.

Sue Sullivan, owner of Howl at the Moon Gems

My given name is Sue Sullivan, but over the years I’ve collected a few other names that feel just as true. In the gem and crystal world, many know me as Gemstoner—a nickname gifted long ago that settled in perfectly as I stepped deeper into healing crystal work. And then there’s Mama Sue, my blues name, given to me by a tiny two-year-old musician named Ben Meine, who grew up to be a wonderfully talented blues guitarist. That one stuck, too.

My love for crystals began in childhood. My maternal grandfather was my first teacher of the natural world. He shared the old ways—herbs and their uses, the purpose of different woods, and my first unofficial stone lessons. Those early teachings shaped everything that followed.

I later earned a Master of Fine Arts in Minneapolis, studied Theology, became an ordained minister, and pursued my Crystal Practitioner training, receiving my Master Certificate in 2012 and Master Diploma in 2021. I’m also an Usui Reiki Master/Teacher.

Like many artists, my interests are wide and wandering, yet they all seem to feed the same creative fire. Years ago at a singer/artist conference, we were asked to sing the reason we were there. What came out surprised me: “I want to sing my soul free.” I think I finally have. That joy spills into every corner of my life now.

For 14 years I ran a metaphysical storefront in Richmond, IL. I loved it, but the business of the business eventually left little time for creating. So in 2014, I closed the store, moved to rural Wisconsin, and returned to the metaphysical show circuit.

I’m blessed with the ability to hear when the stones speak. I don’t consider myself psychic, and I can’t call it on command. Messages usually arrive as a word or two—small keys that often unlock something a person needs to hear. They come when they come.

Eventually, I missed all the familiar faces from my store. It seems Spirit has a sense of humor, and in early 2020 I found myself guided to a charming spot in downtown Elkhorn, where I opened my doors once again. This time, though, everything is in balance. I’m supported by my wonderful helper, Pam, whose presence allows me the spaciousness I need—time for creating, healing work, rest, and the joy of discovering new crystal treasures.

And life has blessed me even further—I became a grandma in December 2021, a bright light through the challenge of a pandemic. Then, in the fall of 2024, my heart doubled over with joy again when twin grandbabies arrived. Three little miracles. I am, without a doubt, blessed.

  1. Omg, Sue.. I love your “resume.”
I was just wondering if you were still in the area and this article let me catch up.❤️
I was so surprised that you have relocated, but not far away in Wisconsin. I too always had a pulll to that area.. in fact, about three years ago, I was up there frequently but mainly at FLAC,, Four Lakes Athletic Club, for tennis. I will certainly look you up and visit your store when I come back in April or May. God Bless you my friend that I haven’t seen in many many years.
