The Harvest Moon, August

Harvest Moon of August

The names corresponding to the 13 Lunar Year Full Moons are what I have come to call them. I give credit to all those before me for figuring out what seems to work and for passing it on to me. They can be called by many other names in respect to your particular path or tradition. (more moon information)

In the US, the late August / early September full moon is more commonly known as the Sturgeon Moon. The sturgeon, a large fish common to the Great Lakes and other nearby bodies of water, is most easily caught during this month. This one is also known as the Fish Moon (rivers and lakes are filled with schools of fish), or the Red Moon (we most often see a blush-colored or reddish hued moon this time of year).

For myself, I prefer the name of Harvest Moon – A Time for Gathering. For those who follow the path of the Wheel of the Year, for me, this moon is the start of my harvest time in both my physical gardens and in my personal perspectives. This is represented in both the physical harvests of energy that was expended in growth and spiritual harvests of the insights and meditations which will sustain both the body and the spirit during the coming winter months.
